Introducing…
The Power and Light Tabloid!
In an effort to spend less time trapped inside these devices and digital life, and in hopes of delivering more tangible, analog goods to you, I am pleased to introduce our new quarterly newspaper! This will be a physical newspaper, printed on our new(ish) Riso printer, that we will mail to you via the USPS every three months. The Tabloid will be similar to our email newsletter in term of shop updates, info, my own ramblings about whatever, but will also include music recommendations, books and other things we’re consuming, guest artist features, a keepsake poster and, you know, just a fun, tangible object you can hold in your human paws.
As democracy and human decency crumble around us and Ai tricks us into believing that robots can take the place of human creativity, I am reeling and find myself seeking comfort in creating and interacting with real things. In turn, I hope to bring some comfort (or even some pleasant offline distraction!) by sharing real things with you.
As a creative person, it feels like I should be making only political work these days. And while I definitely believe that's important (and will continue to support those efforts) I also think it's important to keep making the other stuff I'm good at - the stuff that makes this world feel worth living in. As the political chaos creeps into every corner of our daily lives, we can't look away, but I (personally) also need to remember what I'm working for and why. l need to keep creating a world that feels funny and strange and beautiful and interesting.
Because that's the world I want to live in too.
If this sounds like something you need too, please join us.
Years ago, we used to self-publish a little zine for our local community and customers. That project fell by the wayside during the Covid years but, in early 2024, we started publishing an annual newspaper, printed on an actual newspaper press (see photo above) that we sent out to our wholesale customers, handed out in our retail store, and tucked in with online orders from time to time. I loved designing these newspapers. At a time when I really felt like I needed to “renew my vows”, so to speak, with my creative practice and motivations, this project allowed me to redefine my purpose and remind folks that we are real live human people over here, producing real live tangible goods.
It felt like the antidote to feeding content to the algorithm.
With that in mind, I am really excited about the next iteration of these projects.
I'm calling it the “tabloid” because
a) that's the size of paper we can print on our Riso, and
b) I like the dictionary definition of tabloid:
—————
tab·loid
/ˈtabˌloid/
noun
a newspaper having pages half the size of those of a standard newspaper, typically popular in style and dominated by headlines, photographs, and sensational stories.
North American English
sensational in a lurid or vulgar way.

Our first lurid issue ships in late February, and we'll follow up with subsequent issues in May, August, and November.
