RESIDENCIES

The Golden Hour Artist Residency offers a space for you to step away from your normal life, slow down, and create new ideas in the context of our charming town and beautiful surrounding wilderness. There is no expectation of work production during your time here - just time and space for you to do what you want.

  • WHO IS IT FOR? Artists, writers, designers, musicians, thinkers seeking focused time and space to work on their own independent projects

  • 1-4 week sessions available

  • $250/week or $750/month (plus tax) - all utilities included. A limited number of scholarships are available!

  • Historic apartment in downtown Silver City, NM - see details below.

  • Collaborators or partners are welcome. The apartment is best suited for 1-2 people, with a queen bed and a couch.

  • Experienced printers can have access to Power and Light Press for an additional $100/week. This will include your own dedicated workspace and access to our presses, type, tools, storage, drying rack, rags, cleaning supplies, etc. Full access to Challenge Proof Press, Golding Pearl platen press, and you can schedule time to use the C&Ps and Heidelberg (if experienced). You will need to bring your own paper and ink (though you are welcome to use some of our inks for mixing, etc). You must demonstrate experience and competency with presses you plan on using prior to arrival. We are not able to train resident artists on our equipment at this time.

THE APARTMENT

Built in 1906, this apartment was originally one of five storefronts, part of the Abraham Block.

  • The apartment features super tall ceilings, in the original pressed tin. Huge floor to ceiling windows at the front entrance let in tons of natural, west-facing light.

  • Open concept space - the kitchen and bath are separate at the back of the apartment, but the main living/sleeping/work area is just one big space

  • Dedicated workspace with ample natural light and large work table, perfect for drawing, writing, painting, etc. Probably not appropriate for super messy or intensive processes.

  • Wi Fi
  • Queen bed with brand new hybrid (foam + springs) mattress

  • Best suited for 1-2 people

  • Dresser and large closet

  • Kitchen is fully stocked with dishes, silverware, pots & pans, cooking utensils, fridge, stove/oven, toaster, microwave, french press.

  • Bathroom is basic, but gets the job done with a toilet, small sink, stand-up shower stall, and it features one large window that lets in a ton of lovely natural light.

  • Colorful, eclectic decor, with tons of books, games, record player

  • Semi-private back deck, great spot for morning coffee and evening cocktails

  • While this is a pretty sleepy town, the apartment is located right downtown, around the corner from a busy restaurant in a densely populated neighborhood. Expect street traffic.

  • Walkable to everything downtown, including the Coop, restaurants, shops, the Big Ditch Park, and trailheads

GETTING HERE

Silver City is located in southwestern New Mexico, about an hour north of I-10, near the Arizona and Mexico borders. Our closest cities are Las Cruces (1.5 hours), El Paso (2.5 hours), Tucson (3 hours). Albuquerque is about 4 hours to the north, and Santa Fe and Phoenix are each about 5 hours away. The closest major airports are El Paso and Tucson. We also have a small regional airport that connects via tiny prop plane to ABQ and PHX.

While the downtown area is extremely walkable, we do recommend you bring or rent a car, if possible, so you can explore the greater region. The expansive Gila Wilderness is immediately to our north and offers tons of hiking, camping, river access, hot springs, ancient cliff dwellings, and more. White Sands National Park is about 2.5 hours to the east and Saguaro National Park is about 3 hours to the west.
