In 1955, at age 67, Emma Gatewood told her grown children she was going for a walk. 146 days and 2168 miles later she had hiked the Appalachian Trail. Emma was the first solo female thru-hiker of the AT. At 76, on her third AT hike, she was the oldest female to thru-hike the famous trail.
